Ray's eyes glanced away from the disassembly drone, his face was still a shade of crimson as he muttered that name. Though the way he was smiling told V that he certainly liked the pet name she had chosen for him. If there was any doubt of that, then his next words would prove it.
"I...Quite like that name..."
It took him a great deal of hesitation to finish his sentence without muttering it under his breath like he did whenever he had to say anything embarrassing, but he actually managed to say all of it at a normal volume. Perhaps a sign both of him relaxing, and finally managing to be a little more self-confident.
Although Klein's poking and prodding certainly didn't help with that...Ray agreed with V's sentiment about the prospect of marriage. He added his opinion into the mix as well.
"I-...I think it's a little soon for that! We've only known each other for two days!"
It occurred to Ray that the task of helping Klein grow as a coral was part of his responsibilities. If he was to ever become something like Aegis then even small things like this would need a careful hand guiding him.
"Klein, people um...Well it's complicated, but when it comes to special bonds like this, you can't rush them. There are...Stages, I suppose...And if you go too fast you can completely miss out on those things. Moments that make a bond more important."
Klein listened to the engineer's input, all the while he was teaching the little robot, he continued to do his work on the penguin's interior clean up.
"But Papa really really likes V! Right?"
The human sputtered and had almost dropped his screw driver in surprise. The tool bounced in his hands several times as his failed attempts to grab it sent it higher and higher into the air. He managed to catch it right before it dropped onto the floor, his eyes shooting a nervous glance over at Klein as he quickly answered that question.
"T-Tha! That...! Well, y-y-y-y-yes! Of course!! But it's complicated! W...W-W-w-w-we umm...Ahem..."
He was back to muttering under his breath again...
"v and i haven't even gone on a date yet so um..."
Ray quickly went back on track to avoid lingering on that topic any longer than he had to.
"A-Ahem!! All that is to say...Love is like...Pudding!"
The little robot gasped excitedly.
"Klein wants love!!!"
Ray proceeded to clarify what he meant before this particular analogy got out of hand...
"Right, I know Klein. But let me explain. Pudding is delicious, right? But it's only delicious because there are a lot of specific ingredients making up a whole."
Klein's eyes changed color and his voice became slightly monotone as he responded to pudding ingredients.
"One and a half cups granulated sugar.
A half cup of unsweetened cocoa powder.
One cup of cornstarch or related thickening agent.
One pinch of salt.
4 cups whole milk.
3 tablespoons unsalted butter.
One teaspoon of vanilla flavoring."
The human snapped his fingers in front of Klein to get the robot's attention.
"Klein, focus. I'm not done explaining yet."
The little penguin flapped his wings to acknowledge that he was listening. Ray gave a small nod before continuing.
"Right, those are a lot of nice ingredients! But how do you think that pudding would taste if even one of those was missing? It might not even be pudding anymore! Relationships work that way too. There are a lot of little things that make up a whole. Take one of those out and maybe it won't be very strong. Sure, you can always substitute some things, relationships are really complicated...Even the ones that aren't romantic...But! But it's those ingredients that make it worth it. So you see...Maybe one day V and I will...A...Ahem...talk about marriage... B-But! We have a lot of things that we should really experience before we get to that point!"
The human gave Klein time to process what he had to say before he continued any further.
"So...Does any of that make sense? Of course V is special to me...But I want time to bond with her."
Ray removed a glove and reached out towards the disassembly drone with his ungloved hand, very gently taking hold of one of her own hands as he smiled at her. Just like before his smile was heavily lacking in confidence, wavering and imperfect, but he was still giving it his best effort.
"I'm not experienced with any of this...But I'm done dealing with everything alone."
"Mmm...Klein kinda gets it!"
Well, the human supposed that as long as Klein learned something important about the nature of relationships then it was better than nothing at all...Ray tapped his chin with a free hand as his eyes looked up to the ceiling...He gave his analogy some thought before breaking his own silence.
"... Actually...I think friendship is more like Lemon Posset."
Ray sat on that one for a moment in awkward silence before he got right back to work, not really lingering on weird analogies for longer than necessary. Thankfully for all three of them, Ray had finally managed to un-gunk Klein's interior, and with one last inspection to make sure all of his parts were running properly and unbroken, the human closed Klein up and sealed the back panel tightly.
"There! You've got a clean bill of health Klein. You're free to go."
Ray sat Klein on the floor and watched as the little robot wandered off on his own, out of the room and into the halls of the stormborder. With a job well done he turned to face V, his fingers pressed together calmly.
"There are a few things we could do next...Aegis mentioned good news, but she might be waiting on the others to be prepared before she shares it. On the other hand...Lizzy and Doll might be close to finishing the work they started...What do you think? Is there anything you would like to do, V?"
The human waited patiently, allowing her plenty of time to think it over. They could do either of the things he had listed, or perhaps there was a third something V wanted to do but hadn't found time to ask about it.
A single digital eyebrow appeared above M's eye and raised up as Cloris stated she would have to contact 99 about all of this. She sounded WAY too excited about that...
"You uh...Be sure not to have TOO much fun with that call."
M snickered, barely holding back a full blown laugh as Cloris did her best to try explaining what a fornicator was...While he struggled not to laugh he managed to chime in.
"Yeah, Cloris over here does a LOT of fornicating with Type-99."
That raised eyebrow turned downwards into an annoyed expression as Cloris asked him not to antagonize the crew.
"Okay Mom I'll be civil for now I guessss. Alright but next time he tries trapping me in a jar I'm biting him on the ass. Fair warning!"
Although before he even had time to say anything else E took her hat off. The drone core's single eye went hollow as he tried calling out, but it was simply too late.
"E! Wait-! Uh oh..."
Well, at least her conversation about hacking went well. That more or less made sense...But then she scolded them for making up lies about dirty words. -- Particularly M.
"Hey! The fornicator thing was her fault! I'm just having a little laugh is all! Besidessss, that guy will like it!"
M gave one last chuckle as Cloris asked him if he was done laughing at her expense. He shook his body in a "nodding" motion to indicate that at least for now he WAS done making jokes...Especially since E was ready to answer his questions. He was...Actually a little scared for once...But after taking a few "deep breaths" he psyched himself up enough to go over things again.
"Alright, since Smarty is here I guess I don't have a choice. Who else knows about 'Tessa'? Because right now it seems like only myself and J know the truth...For that matter, it seems to me like J knows a lot more than she's letting on...I mean, why can't we remember anything from before that whole Proxima war? Seems to me like we should at least remember being created, don't you think?"
Meanwhile on Cloris' end of things, her call was successful. After pinging for a few seconds the device went silent...And then a hologram appeared, it was faint and fuzzy, but those in the room could see Type-99's deep yellow eyes piercing from the darkness. The disassembly drone's digital eyes blinked for a moment as she was clearly surprised by the human's call.
"Cloris? I wasn't expecting a call from you this soon. Is there an emergency?"
M looked over, calling out.
"Hey! 99! Where the hell've you been hiding?!"
The hologram's eyes darted around in shock as they became hollow.
"M?! W-Wait a second! What's going on?! Are you allowing others to monitor this call Cloris-?!"
Meanwhile during all of this, the worker drones of Outpost 3 were still going about their daily lives as if nothing had really changed. After Uzi and her friends had slayed the horrible White Aberrant the outpost's storage depot had become quite a mess...Scrapped steel and strange fleshy crimson detritus had become plastered to the walls, the floor, and even the ceiling. Two worker drones stood in the middle of it all, one of them holding a mop. The other seemed to be giving him directions."
"Yeah, so as it turns out this mutant robot corpse doesn't clean itself up! Who would have thought? At least we can rely on you...Ehhh..."
The worker drone leaned in close, inspecting the nametag of the one with a mop. His name tag listed his name as "Henry". The one giving him orders stood up straight, tapping his chin for a moment...
"... Cleanerbot 9000."
The one giving orders had a nametag marking his name as "Frank". Though his name was written over a crossed out name underneath, closer inspection would reveal the original name to be "Ladderbot 5000"...He shrugged, walking off.
"Well, I'm sure you'll do fine! At least I'm not the one getting stuck with death flags this time! I'll turn out the lights so you have fun cleaning up the mess!"
Frank turned out the lights, plunging Henry into complete darkness...Only his eyes allowed light to permeate the room as he glanced around nervously. His back had turned to face the door in his uncertainty and fear...But then the sound of metal slamming against the floor followed by a brief grunt of surprise echoed out into the dark room, causing Henry to quickly look towards the source. The very exit to the room he had ignored before. He breathed a sigh of relief as he saw Frank standing in the doorway, giving him a thumbs up.
"Phew...I thought for a second there you were gonna be a horrible drone eating monster or something!"
Frank laughed, giving Henry playful finger guns.
"Haha, good one Henry!"
A single digital eyebrow curled as Henry gave him a look of suspicion.
"Huh? You've never called me by my name before..."
Henry stared in confusion...His eyes going hollow as he felt something breathing on his neck...'Frank' became translucent and fizzled out of existence...And the room was filled with the screams of a single worker drone before falling silent once more.
