The Village Inn. A place beloved by the local community and frequented by tourists. For a place with as much historical significance as Hollow it only made since it would be host to a first class inn, and the decor only helped to reflect that fact. But right now? There wasn't a tourist in sight. In fact, the only people moving about the inn right now were half of Team JADE, their honorary fifth member, and the teacher who had been assigned to assist the team in their investigations.
Jack and Evelyn had been chosen to receive additional instructions. Only the teachers had been informed of just what was involved in this. As for the students? They were told only to give those two a moment of privacy when they had arrived at the inn. That they were receiving vital information that was for their eyes and ears only. Alba however, was not one to listen to instructions from Ozpin of all people. And he was quite busy trying to peer through the keyhole in the door, making every attempt possible to pry on their top-secret meeting.
"I bet they're discussing something badass! This is just like that episode of Mars Pendragon when the mistral assassins tried to shoot a poison dart through the keyhole of his secret meeting room while he was in peace negotiations with the emperor who had hired the ninja assassins to kill him while he was at his most vulnerable...I feel just like a hidden agent...So cool...!"
The arcana glanced back at Penny and Rivala with a sly smile on his face as he spoke softly so as not to make it obvious to anyone inside the room what he was doing. The three of them had waited outside patiently, but Alba was never a patient type. If anyone else happened to be present with the trio they too would be let in on his input in regards to all of this secrecy.
"So...What do you think this is about anyway? It's not like those two to keep secrets. And Jack wasn't acting like herself on the way here. I bet that dumbass old man put them up to this huh?"
Meanwhile, inside of the room a modified scroll that was provided to the two orphans had been placed on a table...The meeting between the three of them had begun as a hologram flickered to life on the screen displaying none other than the headmaster himself.
The headmaster adjusted his glasses for a moment before staring at the two orphans before him calmly.
"I trust that you're both receiving this message in absolute privacy as I instructed? What I'm about to tell you cannot under any circumstances be shared with anyone other than your fellow Orphan operatives. To reveal this to even one other person could have devastating, far-reaching consequences. As you no doubt have already pieced together, this mission carries another, secondary objective that warranted your involvement. We're all aware of the Mountain Glenn tragedy. But what many people aren't aware of is the root cause. - Grimm experimentation. Merlot Industries was directly involved in top secret genetic experiments being performed on the creatures of grimm.
How far they got in their experiments is unfortunately lost information, all those involved in that company were careful to destroy every last piece of data they stored in regards to their experiments. but from what occurred it's safe to assume they at least succeeded in creating something with terrifyingly destructive power. However, several of the scientists involved in those experiments disappeared. Merlot himself, and another - Dr. Rhys Boreas. This man in particular is considered a security risk for Atlas. And they believe he may have vital information that could put their entire nation in danger. Though they won't specify what this security risk is, we have been working with them for some time to try and find him.
I can't be certain he's here, but the fact that Atlas has mobilized one of their own Orphans tells me there is a chance you may be dealing with Dr. Boreas. Proceed with extreme caution, if he's involved you may encounter grimm the likes of which have never been documented. Your main objective is to ascertain whether or not Doctor Boreas is here, and if he is - We have to capture or neutralize him at any cost. Taking him alive is preferable, but if this carries a great risk of his escape you need to kill him."
He spoke seriously, without a hint of restraint. He used the words "kill him" with a tone that carried a heavy responsibility. This wasn't the first time Jack and Evelyn had to kill someone in their roles as Orphans, and it likely wouldn't be the last. So many revelations came about from one briefing. It was typical of Ozpin - Only reveal exactly what someone needed to know to carry out their missions. All else was unnecessary. But he wasn't done with those words alone.
"Your second objective should he be involved in this incident is to ensure every last experimental grimm is eradicated. I'm sure I don't need to explain to you why mutated grimm escaping into the wild is a threat to all of Remnant.
Finally, I have good reason to believe that Atlas is withholding important information regarding this operation from not just myself but Vale as a whole. I would like for you to make contact with the Atlas operative hidden in Hollow and try to exchange information. - If they refuse to tell you more then you must acquire that information by any means necessary. We can't allow them to hide vital information in a mission like this. Their full cooperation is imperative. Beacon is unsure of just who or where this operative is, but I believe the Atlas Orphan may be key in your search.
That is all I have for you. Remember not to share this with anyone unless absolutely necessary. All of Remnant is counting on your success. End Secure Transmission."
It was hard to deny that he was right. All of this could be a great threat to the entire world if it spread beyond this sleepy village. But each of his words were delivered with a cold, calculated tone. He intended to squash whatever was going on here and move on to the next problem. Whatever became of this supposed doctor was of little importance to him at the end of the day so long as he was considered a non-threat. This enigmatic man who watched Vale from his tower had sent the two orphans on a mission that carried far greater implications than a mere missing persons case. It seems that Hollow may very well have been wrapped up in an apocalyptic threat, and these two weren't the only ones sent to shine light on the shadows. The Mountain Glenn tragedy...Was it really tied to this incident? And could a group of students in training really put a stop to something of this magnitude?
One thing was certain. No matter what happened here, an encounter of grand proportions was inevitable in this secluded village trapped in history.
